Fraction Model
ContentFractions, Decimals, Percents
LearningThis model allows students to see visual representations of fractions, decimals, and percents. At the bottom of the model students are able to choose the numerator and then underneath choose the denominator. The fraction is then shown as the fraction, mixed number (if applicable), decimal, percent, and also depicted in a visual representation. Students are able to choose the way the fraction is depicted from set model, length, area, or region. They are able to compare fractions, decimals and percents by creating a list along the side of the model as well.
The learning that takes place in this activity is relational in that students are using visuals and comparisons to understand the connection between the numerator, denominator and value of the number. It allows an opportunity for teachers to supplement another activity or allow students to explore and discover freely. The resource also offers opportunity for differentiated instruction by changing the range of fractions. Learners can choose from a narrow to wide range of denominators. TechnologyThe role of technology in this model is to represent knowledge and thinking. It is allowing students to see what they are thinking of as fractions, decimals, or percents. It is a visual tool that demonstrates the relationship between the three types of numbers.
