Multiplication of Fractions
ContentFractions, Multiplication of Fractions
LearningThis resources gives a visual representation using a rectangle of the multiplication of fractions. In addition to the visual, the resource gives a step by step demonstration of the process of multiplying fractions. By having these two things done simultaneously it helps students see the connection between the steps in solving a problem and the representation of that in the value of the number.
The learning happening here is a combination of relational and instrumental. The site offers a visual model of multiplication of fractions, allow for students to see the connection to what happens when you multiply the numerator and denominator of fractions. In addition to this, the site gives practice questions to which students can use the visual or simply the formula of multiplying across the fraction. By using the formula the students are utilizing only an instrumental understanding of the content. TechnologyThis technology offers an easy way for students to visualize an otherwise abstract idea. In addition to demonstrating the multiplication, the site also offers practice that gives students the opportunity to use and learn from what was demonstrated. The only disadvantage is that the site does not recognize equivalent fractions. For example, if a student represents 2/6 as 1/3 in the rectangle the program indicates an incorrect answer when mathematically it is equivalent.
